China leads world patent applications

China’s patent system is evolving rapidly amidst global technological competition. Efforts to expedite reviews and enhance standards are underway, yet concerns persist regarding the originality and quality of patents. While China leads in annual patent applications, it faces challenges in fundamental research and international competitiveness. Collaboration with international partners, including through the Patent Prosecution Highway, seeks to address these issues and strengthen China’s position in the global patent landscape.

Data released by the World International Patent Organisation (Wipo) last month showed that China had maintained its position for the fifth straight year as the top origin of patent applications under the UN Patent Cooperation Treaty, filing 69,610 applications in 2023, compared with 55,678 by the United States.
